What is a double in darts and how does it affect my scoring?

If you’re new to darts, it is very important to learn the rules so that you can excel at the skills of throwing darts and play like the pros do! Knowing what tactics and scores will make you win the game are all very important!

Whether you’re new to the game or fairly old to it, you must have played the game of 501! Since most of the tournament level games are of 501, the game is all the more relatable to each and every player who follows the tournaments.

The rules of the 501 game are easy to comprehend: you start with 501 score and with each successive throw the points that you score are subtracted from your score. The first player that brings their score down to zero, wins!

However, note that your score must get to the zero with two pre-conditions. Your final score must get to the exact value of Zero, and you must do that by hitting a double!

What does it mean that you have a bust in darts?

A bust occurs when you throw a higher score than it is needed to achieve the point zero in darts.

Note that there is no reduction in points if the bust happens in the last round.

In order to win the game of darts, it is absolutely necessary that your score gets to a zero. If you throw a score higher than it is needed to achieve a zero, you have achieved what is called a bust.

A bust also happens if you have a remaining score of just 1. Since you need to achieve that zero score with a double, and no double has a score value of 1, a bust happens.

For Example

  • If you have a remaining score of 45, you would aim at throwing a double 20 and a single 5. If you hit the double 20 but you end with scoring a four, you get a bust. This is because now you’re left with just one point to score.
  • A bust also occurs if even you’ve hit the score and brought it down to zero! This is in the case when you haven’t scored a double. A game is won in darts when you have brought the score down to zero by hitting a double. For example, you have a remaining score of 32 left to win the game. You score a 16, you’d still have to score a double 8 in order to satisfy the rule of a double to finish off the game as a winner. If you don’t you score goes back to what it was earlier.
  • In the above case, the score is brought back to the original score it was before the round, and they have to attempt at throwing a double again.

Also, there is a limit to the amount of busts that can happen in a game. The max busts that can happen is 20. If, after all players have maxed out on the 20 rounds of busts, the player with the lowest remaining score will be declared the winner of the game. IF the score remains tied after 20 rounds, the game can be played for another ten rounds until a player wins. If the score still remains the same after 10 turns, it is declared a draw and the match ends without a winner.

Some other Scenarios

To hit the double out and win the game, a player is not mandated to throw all the three darts in their final round. That means, if you hit the double in the first two throws, you win, regardless of one throw remaining.

That being said, what is the lowest score you can have to make a double out and win? Simple, and inarguably, that is a 2. To win the game in that case, a player must hit two 1s to qualify for the win, given that all other prerequisites have been met.

On the flip side, the highest score you can have to close the round without achieving a bust, is 182!

A player can hit triple 20 with all three darts in their round, and get left with 2 points to score. They can then score the two points by hitting 1 in double throw and finish the game, or just aim for hitting 2 once.

The above rules and regulations for bust and double outs apply for all the ’01 matches. Among these the popular ones you’ll see are the 301 and 501.

That being said, darts are an awesome game to play! It’s a fast paced game which can be overthrown by either side in a matter of a turn! If you play with a pro, we’re sure your game level will increase by leaps and bounds over the course of just a few games. That being said, it is essential you find a pro to play and get better at playing the interesting game of darts, and have fun with it.
